1981 FX OVERHAUL

Mocking up...
Nothing is more frustrating then to buy a shiny new part and it doesn't quite
fit. That never happens though...does it...ya right!!!
So as always I'm mocking up every part I get to make sure it fits and do
whatever need to make it fit.
I'm reminded of a guy I new that when building his first bike he bought a
brand new Paughco frame and sent it right out to the painter. I don't think
I need to tell you the rest of the story

Forks.jpg (65254 bytes)

The new 41mm Wide Glide with a 3deg rake.

TankTrees.jpg (77650 bytes) Here I've mounted one of the new flat side gas tanks to see how well it clears the engine and forks.

TreecCearence.jpg (60836 bytes)

The last wide glide I had on the bike was a conversion and the tubes hit the tanks. As you can see from this pic there's no problem with that here.
I can now take these parts off and prep the tanks for paint, take off the rocker boxes for chrome, and all the rest of the millions of little details to come.

Ginding.jpg (82394 bytes)
I'm grinding off the old right side top rear tank mount. This is necessary in order to mount the new rubber mounted tanks. See the Frame page to get a better idea of what I'm up to.
RightTank.jpg (94573 bytes) The right side tank mocked into place. As you can see there's plenty of room for whatever carb setup I want...but I'm keeping the S+S Super E.
Tanks.jpg (77055 bytes) Both tanks in place. I'm take them off and store them until I'm ready to paint. The next thing is to pull the engine parts out. The rocker boxes will go out for chrome and I'm paint the cases.
Chainguard.jpg (106310 bytes) Chain guard.
I like the look of the FL chain guard so here it is on my FX (like the frames are any different).
Apes.jpg (92974 bytes) 15" Ape hangers on 2" risers.
I love tall bars
VroomVroom.jpg (95346 bytes) Every one does it. Sit on the bike and make vroom vroom noises.
You'll note I'm sitting on the frame and my hands are just at shoulder height. When the seat is in place they will be below my shoulders, a nice comfortable ride
